Applicants who lost their old clearance certificate entirely, or whose old clearance was issued a long time ago under different personal circumstances, may also be redirected to the new-application process instead of renewal.
One of the main advantages of renewal over a first-time application is that it does not require booking an appointment or a physical appearance at an NBI branch in most cases. Instead of visiting an office for biometrics and photo capture again, applicants upload their government-issued ID and a recent photo in the prescribed format directly through the online portal, then submit the renewal request.
This makes renewal significantly faster for people who simply need to extend a clearance that is expiring or has already expired, without any change in circumstances since their last application.
The standard NBI Clearance fee is ₱130, plus a ₱25 service charge, bringing the total to around ₱155 for online payments. If you choose to have your renewed clearance delivered to your address instead of claiming it in person, additional courier charges will apply on top of the standard fee.
Payment can typically be made through several channels, including online bank transfers, payment apps such as GCash, and over-the-counter options like Bayad Center or 7-Eleven. Always keep your payment receipt and reference number, since these may be needed if there's an issue with your application later.
Once your renewal application is submitted, processing depends on whether your record comes back as "No Hit" or "Hit." A "No Hit" result means no criminal record history was found against your name, and in this case, your clearance is typically released quickly.
A "Hit" result means a name match or record was found that requires further verification. This can extend processing time to several days, since NBI staff need to manually confirm your identity and clear any discrepancies before releasing the clearance.
Filipinos currently living outside the Philippines who need to renew an expiring or expired clearance may have a different process available to them, often involving submitting documents through a Philippine Embassy or Consulate, since a physical visit to a local NBI branch isn't possible from overseas.
